Osteoporosis and arthritis

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become weak and brittle, becoming more prone to fracture, even with minimal trauma.

Arthritis is any disorder that causes swelling, pain, stiffness or decreased range of motion in the joints. There are many different types of arthritis and our rheumatology specialists are well versed in discerning each of these.

What you should know about osteoporosis and arthritis

  • Osteoporosis fractures typically occur in the hip, wrist or spine. While it affects men and women alike, older women face the highest risk of osteoporosis. Certain medications can also pose a risk for developing osteoporosis.
  • Medication, diet and exercise combined with medication, when appropriate, can significantly strengthen weakened bones and prevent fractures.
  • There are more than 100 different kinds of arthritis, including osteoarthritis – which is the most common. It develops with the wear and tear of cartilage common to aging, injury and obesity.
  • Many of the inflammatory kinds of arthritis have modern treatment options which can help to not only improve the symptoms but even slow or stop the progressive damage seen in many cases.
